Virtual Reality for Design an iron ore pellet producer
VR-simulator for Dismantling Equipment at the Crushing and Processing Plant
Client
Ferrexpo Poltava Mining is an iron ore pellet producer with mining capabilities in Ukraine and sales operations around the world. Ferrexpo Poltava Mining has been mining, processing and selling high-quality iron ore pellets to the global steel industry for 50 years, and has become the third-largest exporter of pellets to the global steel industry.
Challenge
Previously, the knowledge share was not systematic, even though the information was depicted on paper (instructions, manuals, etc), the most valuable knowledge still came from the mentor’s own experience. If a mentor changed the job/was promoted or retired, the information was often lost and distorted. Therefore, newcomers had to learn from their own mistakes, and the learning time got longer as they always had to go through the same sequence of actions. It caused such problems as equipment downtime, the less raw material was being processed, and as a result, the company got less profit.
It has been decided to create an effective digital learning tool – a cross-platform solution with both VR and desktop versions of the 3D object of the crusher and environment around which allows the trainee to feel the reality of what is happening while improving skills and getting all the necessary knowledge without any additional help.
Purpose
The purpose was to create a VR-simulator that allows employees of the crushing and processing plant to undergo training in a safe environment, and develop a sequence of the new and much-needed correct sequence of actions for dismantling a piece of equipment.
The goal of the VR-simulator was to give employees significant training, which would help to reduce equipment downtime, shorten training time, increase the number of processed materials, thus increasing the company’s profit.
Solution
Having consulted with the client, Sensorama specialists collected materials, developed a design-document with the agreed flow of the training, and created a VR simulator with training and exam modes, voice guidance, and text accompaniment. This solution helps employees to develop a correct sequence of actions for dismantling a piece of equipment.
The simulator is unique because it is a cross-platform solution working both on PC and Oculus Quest, which makes it comprehensive for those comfortable to work in VR-glasses or without them. It allows achieving the highest level of user accessibility for the end-user.

Outcome
An innovative product allows to effectively train technical staff, using motor and imaginative memory. The simulator increases the percentage of remembering and accelerating the absorption of information. The instructor station provides continuous monitoring of operations during staff training. The instructor mode allows you to collect analytical information about the flow of a specific scenario by different students, namely: tracking the time and typical errors.
The product allows to train a larger number of personnel in a shorter time, reducing the likelihood of an error in the performance of their duties when dismantling crushing equipment.
